Year 10 geographers headed off to North Wales over half term for a week of investigation and orienteering.

Our annual Geography residential trip saw 21 pupils heading off to Draper's Field Centre in Rhyd-y-Creauau . As well as a great opportunity to experience geography outside the classroom, the trip also provides pupils with crucial preparation for the Geographical Applications section of their GCSE Examinations.

As an introduction to their new surroundings, pupils found themselves investigating infiltration and interception rates around the centre, plus tackling a spot of orienteering in the evening. They also spent a day in the Afon Conwy examining how the river changes as it moves downstream by measuring width, depth, velocity and bedload shape and size. Trip Leader, Mrs Turner, tells us everyone got to grips with using fieldwork equipment, developing sampling strategies and trying to stay dry!

In the beautiful Cwm Idwal/Nant Ffrancon valley, the girls investigated this spectacular post-glacial landscape and how it is managed, as well as measuring footpath erosion. They also visited an organic upland farmer to hear about how he manages the landscape and the conflicts he experiences with other users, such as tourists.

Finally, a day in Betws-y-coed found pupils focusing on Human Geography as they looked at the impact of tourism on this village which tags itself as the 'gateway to Snowdonia'.
